Tikka Masala and cinnamon rolls

Hi guys :). I know it’s been a while 🤡. We’re trying to get back to it so here’s two recipes I made recently.

I was on October break for two weeks by the Baltic sea with my host mother’s son and his family so I didn’t bake anything there. As soon as I got back I started again. First I made something sweet for the family as a thank you for a wonderful vacation. Honestly, I only chose cinnamon rolls is because it’s fall and I can’t find canned pumpkin at the grocery store. My friend Hannah agreed to make them with me, they proved more difficult than we thought. The dough was so thick that the mixer started to smoke before we decided to knead it instead, contrary to the recipe. Luckily, it was all worth it when we cut the dough log to reveal the perfect swirls. We ended up making two pans, one of which we ate ourselves. As for the German reaction, I would say this is my greatest success yet. I heard the words good and even delicious. They were fluffy and light with a nice lemon cream cheese frosting. The family also really enjoyed the treat and sent me a message of thanks. I don’t know if I’ll make it again because it took a really long time but it scratched the fall itch that Hannah and I were having.

Tikka Masala. This one was less successful. I expected it to be but it was still surprising. I should’ve known when I tried to make the naan in advance and failed miserably. I also made this with Hannah and we encountered many problems. By the end I wasn’t sure if it tasted like Tikka Masala. It could be that it’s been so long since I’ve had Indian that I don’t remember, but I don’t think Tikka Masala tastes like cinnamon. It didn’t taste horrible but it was a lot spicier than we were expecting. We warned my host father beforehand but he insisted he wanted to eat it. He was definitely shocked but he took it like an absolute champ. When Hannah stood up to get seconds I saw him trying to hold back the tears. He was more happy that I was trying something new than with the actual food. He was glad to get back to his usual bread for dinner though. There were no compliments but I wouldn’t have praised it either. I’m glad I tried, but I hope I haven’t ruined Indian food for my host dad forever.

I know this wasn’t the most riveting thing ever, but I have some more interesting articles lined up so stay tuned. Also, I’m going to Berlin this Saturday!

Here’s some pictures of what I’ve been up to:

First row: the lovely family I was with for October break

Underneath first row: Hannah and I at the local carnival, the townI was at for vacation, and me participating in the floorball tournament with my friends (we won!)

Third row: our cinnamon rolls and us at a cafe

Fourth row: I carved a Shrek pumpkin and dressed up as a cowgirl for Halloween with you guessed it, Hannah. The same family took me to a German soccer game last Sunday.
